Top skills employers want to see in new hires

NACE (a professional association for career professionals) has provided a list of the top skills that employers want to see in new hires. You can learn more about them in the images below. For those who are unable to view the images, the eight topics you should be able to articulate to employers are listed below.

For Faculty, if you would like to identify which of these skills your courses help instill in students, please feel free to note these in your syllabi.

Career & Self-Development: Proactively developing your career through continual learning, networking, identifying strengths/weaknesses, and navigating professional opportunities
Communication: Clearly and effectively exchanging information, thoughts, and ideas in written, verbal, and non-verbal forms while actively listening to other
Critical Thinking: Identifying and solving problems by gathering data, analyzing information from diverse perspectives, and making sound judgments
Equity & Inclusion: Demonstrating the awareness, attitude, and skills needed to value, engage respectfully, and interact with individuals from all cultural backgrounds and lived experiences
Leadership: Recognizing and leveraging personal and team strengths to achieve shared goals, guide projects, and inspire others
Professionalism: Understanding and demonstrating effective work habits, accountability, integrity, and adaptability in diverse professional environments
Teamwork: Building and maintaining collaborative relationships, working toward common goals, and effectively managing conflicts while respecting diverse viewpoints
Technology: Selecting and ethically leveraging digital tools and platforms to accomplish goals, improve efficiency, and quickly adapt to new systems
