A student shares their internship experience at the Office of Congresswoman Kelly Morrison (MN-03)

Interning in Congresswoman Kelly Morrison’s district office (MN-03) reshaped how I think about public service. My biggest takeaway is that congressional offices hold real power to help constituents — and that starts with making people feel genuinely heard, whether they’re calling about a passport issue or a policy concern. I also came to appreciate that district office work is every bit as consequential as what happens in Washington; it’s where policy meets people’s daily lives.

My coursework at the La Follette School gave me a grounding in policy analysis and public administration that made it easier to understand the “why” behind constituent services and legislative priorities, even as I learned the practical, people-facing side on the job. What surprised — and genuinely helped — me most was connecting with other interns. Hearing their experiences made me feel less alone in mine and gave me concrete pointers for navigating the rest of the summer.

Above all, this internship confirmed how much I enjoy working in politics and how rewarding this career path can be. I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to future La Follette students looking to see policy and public service in action.
