The role: BWM’s current strategic plan calls for consolidating our dozens of designated funds into five clear categories – and building a single, searchable digital source of truth for every fund we hold. This internship owns a real piece of that project, working directly with the Executive Director and our finance lead.
What you’ll do:
– Review decades of fund correspondence and records (digital and physical) to reconstruct each fund’s origin, donor intent, and restriction terms
– Scan and digitize physical documents into an organized, searchable archive
– Build a digital summary sheet for each fund: purpose, restrictions (temporary vs. permanent), balance history, and documentation sources
– Analyze which funds can be consolidated and how – flagging which actions the board can approve outright and which require donor consent
– Present findings and recommendations to staff and, potentially, board committees
What you’ll take away: hands-on experience with nonprofit fund accounting concepts, donor-restriction law in practice, institutional records management, and a portfolio-ready policy project with a visible outcome.
Who fits: a policy, public affairs, or nonprofit-track student who is meticulous with documents, comfortable with ambiguity (records from 1987 rarely label themselves), and writes clearly. Interest in international development or faith-based organizations is a plus; an accounting background is not required.
Logistics:
* Term: 8-12 weeks from start of project
* Hours/week: Flexible
* Stipend: $1,500 for project completion
* Remote – start and end project with in-person meetings possible.
