What is “social capital” and how do you build it?
Social capital is the network of relationships, shared values, and trust that enables individuals and communities to work together for mutual benefit. It acts as a collective resource, providing access to information, support, and opportunities that are often more critical for achieving personal and professional goals than raw financial capital or individual skill.
Key Dimensions
Social capital is generally understood through three main types of connections:
- Bonding Social Capital: Strong, close-knit ties between similar individuals (e.g., family, close friends, or people of the same background) that provide emotional support and a strong sense of identity
- Bridging Social Capital: Weaker, looser connections between diverse groups (e.g., different socioeconomic classes, cultures, or industries) that help share new ideas and information
- Linking Social Capital: Vertical connections to people or institutions in positions of authority or power, which help access resources, leverage influence, and navigate formal systems
You can use research tools like The Social Capital Atlas to visualize how different dimensions of local social networks correlate with community resilience and economic mobility across the United States
